I was excited when Laura started to find her voice. Back in my earlier days, even when I was a little more committed to the man as the primary leader in the home, I still wanted Laura to have equal say and an equal voice. The few times that she gave speeches made me wish she could preach, and I could sit in the audience. She has a more natural speaking voice, and she has always had something vital to say. Since I was a preacher and writer, I assumed I was using my voice and nothing much was hindering it. Itâs amazing how confused we can be in this area. I certainly was. It wasnât until recently that my friend Mark Karris invited me to go a little deeper and I am glad that I did. Please understand I am not talking about introverts and extroverts.
I will most likely always be an introvert. I love people, I just donât want them around all the time. I have friends that are extroverts and introverts, people that talk a lot and people that talk a little. I know natural born speakers, and people that struggle to speak well, especially in public. Even with writers, there is a great mixture of personalities and temperaments. I think finding our voice is something a little deeper than just what we have proclivity toward. In its simplest form, finding our voice may be that we know who we are and how we are learning how to express it.
One thing is for sure: If we donât get to say what we really need to say, our voice goes down into our shadow, and we suffer the consequences of that. Like many other things, when our voice gets pushed down into our shadow, it comes out wrongly and at inopportune times. When I am not speaking from a place of authenticity, I end up speaking my truth to the wrong people at the wrong times and with the wrong attitude. But, why is finding our voice even necessary?
My friend, Mark Karris says,
âFor many of us, it is not just finding our voice, it is sharing it with others that is so powerful. When there is a cacophony of voices all around us, people listening to us helps us feel safe and alive. It validates our existence and soothes our existential angst, especially if we are prone to thinking about our mortality and sheer evaporation from existence in a relatively brief period of time. Sharing our voice with others helps us feel less alone, more connected, and also provides tremendous purpose. Knowing we are making a difference in the world, knowing that our pain, suffering, and divine gems can help someone else, is hugely rewarding.â1
I thought I started finding my voice in college after I almost failed speech class because I forgot half of my 15-minute final speech. I realized I might have a problem that needed to be addressed. A couple of years later, one of my managers called me into her office and told me I did indeed have a problem.
